Annual Conference Safety Highlights
Sheri Bankston, Safety & Risk Management Council  July/August -2019

ASCC’s Annual Conference is September 19-22 in the beautiful city of Chicago. This year’s event promises to be packed with a variety of information pertinent to concrete professionals. Your Safety and Risk Management Council (SRMC) has worked diligently on a lineup of seminars and roundtable discussions you won’t want to miss!

Your attendance will give you the opportunity to obtain a wealth of information from industry experts, network with professionals with similar interests and challenges, and learn about new and groundbreaking technology! Q&A sessions allow you to pose questions to experts, obtain varying viewpoints that may help in your decision-making process about a given product or service, and share your knowledge and expertise.

This year’s conference includes the following:

Auto Fleet Liability: Don’t Let an Employee Drive You Out of Business – Randy Mansell (Seminar)

Liability associated with employee driving may be one of the largest financial risks you face. This session will outline the liability exposures and review how past driving behaviors/citations affect the likelihood of future accidents, your exposure with employees driving their personal cars, drive screening and evaluation methods, distracted driving policies, and the pros and cons of telematics/GPS. We will also review court case precedence including a discussion about the key components of a fleet risk management program to address liability and punitive damages from negligent entrustment suits.

Hardhats to Helmets – Scott Greenhaus & Seth Randall (Seminar)

The iconic construction hard hat has changed very little in 50 years. Developments in understanding the causes and prevention of debilitating, often fatal, head injuries are leading a revolutionary change in the way we protect people from head injuries. The classic hard hat is about to change forever.

OCIP/CCIP – Larry Cornwell & Phil Diekemper (Roundtable)

OCIPs (Owner Controlled Insurance Programs) and CCIPs (Contractor Controlled Insurance Programs) are becoming more prevalent on larger projects. Projects with these programs typically provide General Liability, Workers Compensation, and Builders Risk insurance for all contractors, including subcontractors. Such coverage for on-site work is in lieu of each contractor’s individually purchased coverage. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages for such insurance arrangements.

Exoskeleton Technologies – Larry Cornwell & Wayne Kirkland (Booth Demo)

See Levitate Technologies and CNA Insurance demonstrate the new AIRFRAME Exoskeleton. Human augmentation is a new technology that is showing resounding results in reducing worker fatigue, increasing productivity, and reducing musculoskeletal injuries. CNA has recently collaborated with Levitate in a study of the exoskeleton in construction. The study found the productivity and fatigue findings to be equivalent to those in an independent study performed with John Deere and Toyota. See and try on a practical new device that reduces muscle stress and fatigue — making the end of the day feel like the beginning.

In addition to these seminars and roundtables, ASCC will host its annual Awards Dinner on the evening of September 19, from 7 – 8:30 pm, including safety awards for calendar year 2018. Participating in a safety awards program is an excellent way to demonstrate your commitment to safety to your insurance carrier, customers, and employees. More and more owners and specifiers are looking carefully at their contractors, and the general perception is that a firm that is actively taking steps to control safety in their operations is also better managed in other areas. Many of your clients may already be requesting your Safety Experience Modification Rates, and more, as a part of the bidding process.
