It’s been a busy beginning to the year, and there is a lot happening at the ASCC. To start, ASCC had its big presence at the 50th anniversary of the World of Concrete starting with a large crowd at the Annual Kickoff Bash. Attendees enjoyed a tropical theme featuring roasted pig and all of the trimmings. This year featured the emergence of the new DCC/CPC Experience which included TED type talks with pioneers of the decorative and polished concrete industries, a decorative and polished concrete timeline and the Concrete Hall of Fame. The Central Hall booth featured a new twist this year with ASCC associate member From the Future providing virtual reality(VR) training. If you caught the CBS Sunday Morning News on February 10th, you would have caught a glimpse of the VR training at the Central Hall booth. The booths were packed with attendees from start to finish, and the ASCC presence at the show was unparalleled!

The World of Concrete ASCC Board meeting was busy and the Board of Directors adopted a new “balanced” budget for fiscal year 2023/24. The Board of Directors also approved the establishment of the ASCC Social Media Committee, which will be “chaired” by Sundek’s Deidre Dann. The new committee is charged with mapping the future social media needs of the ASCC.

The ASCC Sustainability Committee and Type IL PLC Task Force are getting back to work on February 29th looking at ways to assist the industry at the concrete industry makes the transition to Type IL PLC.

The ASCC Education, Research & Development Foundation will be funding the Virginia Tech Hard Hats and Helmets research study starting a little later in 2024. As a result of generous contributions from Mike Poppoff  and Gay Dorsey (Poppoff, Inc.), Jack and Ellen Cooney (Somero Enterprises, Inc.), Clay and Jeanne Fischer, and Baker Concrete Construction, the ASCC Education, Research & Development Foundation will be making contribution to this study. The four phases of the study will include:

1. Characterize the conditions associated with head impacts in construction through analysis of accident reports and surveillance video.

2. Generalize the real-world loading conditions observed in the reconstructions to controlled laboratory test systems.

3. Develop STAR model to combine data from multiple test sites and compute an overall performance score representative of expected real-world injury rates.

4. Test all safety helmets currently available and publicly release data on the Virginia Tech Helmet Ratings website.

Plenty of time to meet new friends and reacquaint with others at the St. Louis Cardinals baseball game or over a cup of coffee in the breakout room.
