Norton Children’s Hospital Healing Garden, Architectural Concrete Construction, Louisville, KY

The Norton Children’s Hospital Garden posed a unique set of challenges the contractor had never faced. In the winter, beginning at 4 a.m. and in below freezing temperatures, the contractor installed custom radii forms atop a foam subgrade. This required out of the box problem solving to attach the forms to the foam without compromising the foam boards during demolding. This project was on the second floor of a parking garage, so weight was a huge factor in the installation process; no gravel subgrade could be used. A pumpable, lightweight concrete mix with custom integral colors was developed to meet the hospital’s vision. The custom colors gave this finished product a one of a kind look for the children to enjoy while recovering.
