The Manila Zoo rehabilitation project did a GFRC Pre Cast installation to simulate bamboo using a combination of customized yellow based color hardener and stains to create the natural bamboo finish. The fabrication workshop was done inside the Zoo complex and we used silicon molds and casted natural bamboo. The result of the GFRC Precast installation created a durable natural looking finish facade installation that covered most of the animal enclosures, fences and gates.

Project consisted of both interior as well as exterior elements to create a unified aesthetic from inside the café to the outdoor patio. We placed and polished a 2,200 SF floor in the library café using the Bomanite Renaissance deep grind system. We also installed a cast-in-place bench that is bisected by a glass curtain wall separating the café from the exterior patio. On the outside, we installed an 1,800 SF outdoor patio to match the aesthetic of the interior floor. The patio was framed by a Bomanite Revealed band as well. There were multiple elements to the intricate project, including hand grinding and polishing the concrete bench. Great representation of the potential to create a seamless design.

This approximately 10000 sqft job had to be completed while working around a full working fire department, so when things got hot the fire station had a job to do whether Polyaspartic was on the ground or not. When designing a floor for a fire station, you have to take in the amount of wear and tear the floor will receive from foot traffic, chemicals, and daily use of equipment. When looking at the colors used in the flake, the metallic colors, the perforated logo, and the topcoat, all things were very carefully chosen to provide correlation and durability with the fire station.

First Place: Cementitious Overlays, Over 5,000 SF

As guests first arrive in the land, they step into the Village Marketplace and are welcomed by an elaborate concrete medallion defining the Chinese Zodiac. This medallion was achieved as a combination of precast elements, cast-in-place colored concrete, concrete staining, and concrete engraving. At the outskirts of Marketplace is the Panda Village. This area features another concrete medallion, executed utilizing precast concrete mosaic chips that are wet set into a full depth concrete subbase. This black and white concrete mosaic is the jewel of the surrounding paving surfaces; surfaces that consist of imprinted wood planks, textured dirt concrete, and imprinted grass.

Across the waterway from the Marketplace is the Jade Palace Courtyard. The Palace itself towers high overhead on the mountaintop while the surface below displays an intricate flower that was hand engraved into the concrete surface. Here, the simple architecture of the marketplace gives away to the more formal and regal red-style buildings and the surrounding decorative and imprinted concrete surfaces. The floors of the Jade Palace are a combination of blue and green polished self-leveling concrete and a stampable overlay imprinted designed simulating large mountain stones.

2023 DCC Award Winner
Jurassic World Isla Nubar at Universal Beijing Resort, Universal Creative, Orlando, FL
First Place: Cast-in-Place Stamped Concrete, Over 5,000 SF

The prehistoric adventure begins when guests step through the iconic Jurassic World gates at Universal Beijing Resort and proceed into a tropical paradise of craggy mountain peaks, lush rainforests, and majestic waterfalls that cascade into a pristine lagoon. The 113,000 sq ft of textured and imprinted concrete interwoven with natural stone brings the realism of worn dirt and mud at the base of 187,000 sq ft of hand carved rockwork and tree roots. The west side gates open onto one of the park’s most impressive landmarks: a heavily fortified domed enclosure, the Aviary. The cast in place concrete, imitating wooden bridges and natural stone, guide guests through the experience. In the Atrium, guests wind along the serpentine queue towards the land's dark ride where man meets raptor beast. The polished concrete and salt /pepper exposed aggregate surfaces create the perfect balance of form and function. Hidden throughout the land are numerous imprinted and textured concrete details such as dinosaur prints, volcanic rocks, and carved tree roots. The combination of stone, concrete, epoxy resins, acid [1]based staining, metal embeds, and themed painting gives the final effects of prehistorical adventure. Jurassic World guests can take a break from their prehistoric adventures and sit down to a leisurely meal at Hammond’s, an elegant table-service restaurant overlooking the park’s lagoon.

Republic Plaza, Colorado Hardscapes, Denver, CO
First Place: Cast-in-Place Special Finishes, Under 5,000 SF

Colorado Hardscapes installed 156 linear feet of Sandscape Refined curved benches and 189 linear feet of Sandscape Refined planter walls with a more conventional shape. The biggest challenges of this project were the difficult access and hot summer temperatures. Working right off 16th street, we were limited to only using Tremont Street for access in addition to the complications of downtown in general. This required us to place the benches in smaller loads. Despite placing multiple batches, the Sandscape Refined has a consistent finish and color from one side of a pour joint to the next. With its superior structural capacities, faster production time and cost-effectiveness, cast-in-place concrete offers an outstanding solution for various construction projects.

Enormous towers erupt from the multi-colored cast in place concrete surfaces, sending signals deep into space and communicating with other N.E.S.T. facilities around the world. Sand blasted ancient Cybertronian glyphs pattern the surfaces while embedded stainless steel monograms and precast concrete medallions adorn the monument bases. Twenty-six different exterior concrete finishes, combined with eleven unique interior flooring surfaces, produce a grand total of 230,000 sq ft of finished concrete and stone surfaces.

Presidio Tunnel Tops, T.B. Penick & Sons, Inc., San Diego, CA
First Place: Architectural Cast-in-Place Concrete Structures, Over 5,000 SF

Back in 1993, work began to replace the seismically unsafe Doyle Drive, and the progressive idea to construct two tunnels with parkland on top was born. Countless hours of community input, collaboration between the Presidio Trust and the National Park Service, and fundraising (to the tune of $98 million) by the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy have resulted in Presidio Tunnel Tops, a park that will change the face of San Francisco. In 2014, the “Partnership for the Presidio” launched an international design competition to find a team to work with the community to design Presidio Tunnel Tops & Landscape Architect James Corner Field Operations selected to develop the 14-acre parkland for San Francisco’s historic Presidio. We worked closely with Field Operations to develop all the site concrete including 4,400 CSF of the one[1]of-a-kind decorative shotcrete overlook walls, 139,250 SF of Lithocrete paving seeded with decorative aggregate ranging in size from ¾”, ¼”, and 1/8”, 10,600 CSF of walls with a light a quarried stone finish, 1,020 LF of stairs, 100 LF of stadium seats, 1,450 LF of curbs with a Titanium Dioxide admixture, and 8,500 SF all other site concrete.
