2017 DCC Award Winner
Musas Museum of Art of Sonora, Concrete by Hallack

First Place: Stained / Under 5000 SF

This project was a combination installation and training in Sonora, Mexico. After meeting the general contractor at World of Concrete, a site visit was scheduled, material was procured and brokered into Mexico, and the training / installation was scheduled.

The floor design was created by students of the School of Architecture at the University of Sonora to mimic the Seri Indian design on the lights above. During the installation the building remained open to the elements, which made keeping the floor clean of dust and debris difficult. The project required multiple site visits, but the GC and community were impressed with the finished floor.

2017 DCC Award Winner
Midland Community Aviation Area - Compass Rose, Fisher Companies

First Place: Concrete Artistry / Under 5000 SF

The Barstow Airport wanted a compass rose that would serve as a key educational piece. The piece created by Fisher Companies exceeded everyone’s expectations.

The 8,500 pound compass was transferred to the site and employees worked together to give this gift to the Midland Community. It has received citations from Congress, Michigan’s Attorney General, and was largely responsible for the Barstow Airport being named the Airport of the Year in Michigan. Judges were amazed at the forming process required to create such intricate details.

1805 DAR, T.B. Penick & Sons, Inc.

First Place: Project Video

The project at East Palomar Street in Chula Vista, CA was 133,000 SF of pervious concrete and 21,000 SF of Lithocrete.

Crews at T.B. Penick worked with CalTrans’s own mix design for pervious versus the Penick mix they were used to. Site issues made Telebelt usage a must, along with occasionally having trucks stuck in the subgrade bed.

2017 DCC Award Winner
Highway 299 Curve Improvement, Trademark Concrete Systems

First Place: Stained / Over 5000 SF

This project involved staining 11,500 SF of a concrete retaining wall, ranging in height from 5’ to 48’.

Five colors of stain were used to color each “rock.” Each was colored by hand with a primary and at least one secondary color. The work was completed next to a two lane highway with considerable traffic. The judges liked the attention given to each stone versus a single color spray.

Heavy Lifting Table, Dylan Myers Design

First Place: Countertops

The Millau Viaduct bridge in southern France was the owners’ inspiration for this unique and over the top executive table.

The famous French landmark conjured images of the bridge floating in thin air amongst the clouds. The 17 foot by 11 foot table provides substantial working area for each employee and is the centerpiece of a new corporate headquarters. Although Dylan Myers Design does not have a lengthy history, this project shows a promising future for the company.

Fashion Show Mall, T.B. Penick & Sons, Inc.

First Place: Vertical Application / Over 5000 SF

A high profile fixture on the Las Vegas strip, this project required special attention to logistics, in addition to dealing with wide ranging temperatures and numerous specified finishes.

Vertical finishes included 18,000 contact SF of walls and benches with radius shapes with battered edges, a mix of poured in place and precast concrete. The walls and benches feature a proprietary product that is troweled on to create a stone finish complimenting the quarried stone flatwork. The judges were impressed with the workmanship in the consistency of the coloring and finish.

2017 DCC Award Winner
Dover Heights, Honestone

First Place: Overlays – ¼” - 2” / Under 5000 SF

Australia’s polished concrete overlay market still in its infancy, this project called for a huge leap of faith from Sam Crawford Architects and the homeowner. Honestone, however, relishes this kind of challenge.

The project was for the complete remodel of the home’s ground level. The design involved the strip out and realignment of walls to introduce a new layout to the entry, living, kitchen, dining and laundry areas. The look of polished concrete was desired in the kitchen, living and dining room areas, however existing conditions prohibited the use of a traditional polished slab at 3 inches (75mm). Honestone was selected for the thin profile of their product and its concrete look. Careful planning was needed to ensure maximum access for the crew. Some of the substrate required corrective leveling. A rapid cure, high early strength screed enabled Honestone to meet the builder’s tight timeframe. With the ever growing trend for Green Build, the use of natural pebble and marble on this project enhanced compliance.

2017 DCC Award Winner
DeWhitt Residence, Tom Ralston Concrete

First Place: Multiple Applications / Under 5000 SF

DeWhitt is an imaginative project conjuring images of a movie set. The Mount Oomunhum bench was constructed to mirror the nearby mountain.

The bench was constructed over a foam base using peat moss and sea sponges to create the lichen and multiple colors for the rocks. The fire pit includes custom bronze snakes with LED eyes imbedded into a filled glass mold. Larger bronze snakes adorn the countertops and backsplashes made with green color hardener and with numerous steel tube conduits running through them. Countertops have blue veins and over 300 individual fiber optics that were a tremendous challenge to construct. The owners were ecstatic with the year long effort. Judges were impressed with the intricate details, and the ability to create something never seen before.

2017 DCC Award Winner
Denver Airport South Terminal, Colorado Hardscapes

First Place: Polished / Under 5000 SF

Continuing a two-year tradition of having unique projects win this category, Colorado Hardscapes’ airport expansion is a non-traditional polishing project - - bench seating.

Colorado Hardscapes used mock-ups to test the reverse batter, bull nosed edges, and polished finish. Some benches are straight, while other have radiuses along with electrical boxes and integrated wiring. If that weren’t enough the benches are on an elevated deck surrounded by large glass canopies that created a challenge getting concrete to the work area. Custom made Styrofoam forms and blockouts were used and local suppliers were sourced for the special polishing equipment required to polish the bull nose edges and tops of each bench. The judges appreciated the challenges overcome to create this unique seating.

Battery Park, T.B. Penick & Sons, Inc.

First Place: Decorative Environmental / Over 5000 SF

In anticipation of the 75th Anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge, the National Parks Conservancy decided to make improvements to Battery East by adding bicycle and pedestrian paths, stadium style seating, and accessible viewing areas.

To comply with California’s new sustainability regulations, the park needed reducing the volume of storm water runoff while achieving the durability to deal with an anticipated 7,000 visitors a day. T.B. Penick turned to a permeable paving material to accomplish this. The National Park Service has used permeable concrete in the past but never gave it this natural look with special aggregates and color.

Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum, Dancer Concrete Design

First Place: Polished / Over 5000 SF

The historic museum required an abundance of patience to complete the detailed work. Having to re- mobilize often to allow the museum to remain open during construction added to the difficulty.

Achieving the clean lines that caught the judges’ eye, required over two miles of tape and plastic.

Colors and pattern were chosen to match the floors in other areas of the museum, using a combination of 4 dyes. The floor was given an 800 grit finish, providing ample shine and providing an amazing backdrop to the classic automobiles that now occupy the finished space.

2017 DCC Award Winner
625 H St., Hyde Concrete

First Place: Vertical Application / Under 5000 SF

625 H Street is in Washington D.C. where the desire for the modern concrete look is high. Once the architects saw the workmanship of the cementious wall finish, and detailed and sealed columns, the scope of the project increased greatly.

Vertical applications were just under 5,000 square feet. They included wall prep, reinforcing, multiple layers of cementious plaster with integral color and hard troweling. The solution was a cost-effective finish that celebrated the look and feel of concrete seen throughout the common areas of the project. The judges liked the modern look and the decorative cementious solution to an everyday problem faced by designers.

2017 DCC Award Winner
480 Queen, Surface Archetypes

First Place: Overlays – less than ¼” / Over 5000 SF.

This project requires you to look up, not down. Surface Archetypes was contracted to install decorative plaster over 37,000 square feet of wall and ceiling surfaces.

The 32-story office tower is located in Brisbane, Queensland, AU, and at the time was the largest ever Ardex panDomo project. Following a rigorous sampling period to select colors and styles, the logistics of maintaining color and effect throughout the project were challenging. Maintaining a texturing style is tough with one person, but adding eight additional individuals made consistency the biggest issue and what caught the judges attention as an award-winning undertaking.

2017 DCC Award Winner
Berard Residence Driveway, Alchemy Concrete

First Place: Cast-in-Place Stamped Concrete, Over 5000 SF

The Berard driveway is approximately 13,000 SF of heated driveway and walkway with roughly 25,000 SF of unheated driveway; close to 600 cy of integrally colored concrete. The design included stamped borders, and broom finish textures.

The lannon stone-like natural buff color on the main motor court ties in with the home’s stone veneer and the contrasting slate gray border picks up the color of the surrounding landscape. The driveway’s elegant curves lend a grand feeling to the residence.

Design and construction required careful attention to detail including coordination with mechanical contractor/components, slope, drainage, accessibility and aesthetics. After excavating the existing blacktop driveway, 6” of gravel road base material was placed and compacted, followed by a layer of 2” polystyrene foam. The heating contractor installed the hydronic tubing, which consisted of six separate zones, each equipped with smart controllers to monitor temperature and moisture levels. The mix was 4,000 PSI full air- entrained, with nylon fiber and steel mesh reinforcement.

Slopes were a major concern, requiring more complex forming than a typical driveway project. Special care was taken to ensure a consistent grade due to a 6’ drop, which continued over 40’. The sloped portion of the driveway was poured in three sections; the 2’ borders were poured first to define the area, and the main motor court was filled in.

A new landmark building located on the Television Academy campus includes a media center and state- of-the-art theatre opened for the 70th anniversary.

Trademark constructed the radius stairs, planter walls, curbs, and flatwork paving. Nearly 15,000 SF of sand finished paving was placed with alternating bands of 3/8” hand seeded white aggregate that also received a sand finish texture. The layout of the radius, and the additional imbedded lighting made a difficult design even more challenging.

With sustainability in mind, the goal was to decrease water usage by half and create outdoor recreation and gathering spaces for the tenants. Shaw & Sons poured over 3,800 yards of concrete and 2,680 lineal feet of walls.

The completed design includes three water features including a 11,000 SF river with a bottom that’s a combination of custom tooled groove texture and seeded glass fade. Paving design features a rectilinear patter with inlaid LED lights. The field is a natural gray light wash finish while bands are graphite integral color with a light wash finish. Other paving included white cement seeded with silver mica, seeded blue glass, and seeded mother of pearl shells. The contractor used a proprietary Presto Wall finish to tie in existing walls to the new walls and save the cost of white cement. Planter walls and bench seats were poured in place with natural gray cement and also Presto finished with a white mix. The judges were impressed with the design implementing basic colors and finishes mixed with elegant applications to create a fantastic outcome.

2017 DCC Award Winner
Railroad Depot Staircase, Concrete Strategies

First Place: Architectural Cast-in-Place Concrete Structures / Under 5000 SF

Although greatly deteriorated, this staircase was placed on the National Historic Register in 1994. Concrete Strategies had to duplicate the original design of the Grand Staircase with only the measurements of the deteriorated structure to go by.

Great lengths had to be taken to create molds, assess the proper grade for each piece of the staircase, and deliver a product to match the original design. The project is hoped to be the catalyst to the restoration of the entire railroad depot. The judges were impressed with the care and intricacy of the efforts taken to duplicate the original details.

2017 DCC Award Winner
Westside Parcel C, Sundeck of Washington

First Place: Overlays – less than ¼” / Under 5000 SF

Westside Parcel C was an upscale apartment community searching for a colorful design.

Although the judges did not love the color choices - - not chosen by the contractor - - they did notice significant details in the layout and design. The texturing is textbook for overlayments and the layout was professionally handled by running patterns across the pool to maintain consistency. This is one of many projects installed by Sundek of Washington for this general contractor and will likely lead to many more.

2017 DCC Award Winner
Pyrmont Fire Station, Honestone

First Place: Overlays – ¼” - 2” / Over 5000 SF

This inner city fire station that doubled the building size, involved blending new with old over a total of four levels.

As a Heritage listed building, all existing finishes had to be protected, meaning timber door treads, floors, and skirtings were all left intact. Material delays were plenty and once onsite product was craned through century-old windows. The overlayment product life was minimal in the Australian summers, and polishing was tedious to create the correct amount of aggregate exposure. Judges commented on the nice blend of new and old areas receiving the overlayment and the finish.

Sundek of San Antonio, San Antonio, TX

2017

Also known as River Return, environmental artist Stacy Levy created the walkway design that mimics the swirls and eddies of the San Antonio River. River return is the northernmost in the Mission Reach and likely the first to be encountered by visitors, the Mission Concepción portal tells the story of the establishment of the five Spanish Missions and announces one's arrival at Mission Concepción from the San Antonio River.

The concrete was first stained, followed by months of contractors using a needle scaler to remove the surface. What was left was a beautiful combination of stained and exposed concrete. San Antonio’s mayor commented “The San Antonio River flows through the city, its liquid presence flowing past the hardscape of the urban environment. This wonderful contrast of liquid nature and solid infrastructure is stunning.” San Antonio River Authority manager Suzanne Scott stated “With our recently recognized World Heritage designation, it is even more important to celebrate the connections between the river… to the wonderful Mission at this location.”

Patterson Residence, Bomanite Toronto

First Place: Cast-in-place – Special Finishes / Under 5000 SF

The Patterson Residence is a durable, stylish driveway and patio that can withstand the Canadian winters. After reviewing samples of systems, aggregates, and exposure levels, the owners chose an elegant combination of exposed Buckskin color.

Approximately 3,000 SF of concrete was placed for the driveway. Driveway bands were poured separately using a limestone textured finished. Saw cuts were incorporated into the design. Judges commented on how the design and choice of materials compliment the house. They also loved the courtyard patio which uses grass borders to maintain a softness around the many hardscape features.

2017 DCC Award Winner
Owens Residence, Greystone Masonry

First Place: Cast-in-place – Stamped / Under 5000 SF

This project consisted of a stamped concrete pool deck with custom fireplace, fire pit, outdoor kitchen, pavilion, sitting and retaining walls.

The homeowners envisioned a family-friendly environment where they could entertain and share evenings together in an elegant yet natural atmosphere. Access to the site was not ideal due to an 18 foot elevation difference from one side of the yard to the other. Drainage was a major factor. Lighting was a key element to fully present the overall beauty of this project. One of the key items noticed by the judges was how well the coloring of the flatwork matched the vertical walls.
