2019 DCC Award Winner
Fern Street Public Art Project, T.B. Penick & Sons, Inc.

First Place: Project Video

Building on the City of Cambridge’s continuing mission to create a more playful public realm, the City, along with New York-based artists, created a distinctive public-art project for a shared bicycle/pedestrian path that aims to ease traffic and transform a utilitarian path into a striking public space that integrates play for all ages. As part of a sewer-separation project, Fern Street was selected as a safe passage to a nearby park and surrounding neighborhoods. The concept for the path, titled “On the Other Side,” was to incorporate unique topography and pattern, weaving them together for a sensory and tactile experience. In addition to being colorful and fun, the city wanted it to be like an obstacle course, and credit the idea from their observations of kids at play and how they interact with their environment.

2019 DCC Award Winner
National Veteran's Memorial & Museum, Baker Concrete Construction

First Place: Architectural Cast-in-Place Concrete Structures / Over 5000 SF

Designed by Allied Works Architect, this unique structure consists of three interwoven concrete rings. As one moves from the center, three wall arches form concentric ovals that converge and diverge along their vertical plane. This creates a structure that supports the rooftop sanctuary, while sheltering the exhibits below. From day one, the Baker team knew this was going to be one of the most intricate projects they had ever worked on. The team was confronted with many unique challenges including building from a virtually constructed 3D model, rather than from traditional dimensional drawings; placing an extremely high density of resteel into compound curving and arching geometric shapes; and achieving proper concrete consolidation for an as-cast finish, in a multifaceted building with heavy rebar congestion. With over 8,000 cubic yards of concrete, the building’s frame is one of the most complex concrete structures to ever be built in Ohio.

2019 DCC Award Winner
Harbor View Residence, Modern Concrete

First Place: Vertical Facades / Under 5000 SF

This project called for board form look walls on fire place surrounds and a showcase wall. The owners wanted a tight seam wood look with minimal variances in the finish; a tough task seeing how all concrete needed to be pumped from the rooftop, a 15-18 foot drop. Custom made panels and preparation of all boards was very tedious. Each board was examined for the proper grain, then lightly sandblasted, power-washed, heated and left outside. The challenging aspects were laying out the panels with the proper overlapping to hide all seams. The bracing had to be precise and strong enough to hold back the pressure from pumping concrete from the rooftop.

2019 DCC Award Winner
Wellesley College Pendleton Hall, Consigli Construction Co.

First Place: Vertical Facades / Over 5000 SF

This new 10,000 SF addition was designed to unite two existing buildings to make room for visual and musical arts. The design team wanted to create a building that was timeless and elemental, but also a product of its place, time and purpose. Exposed concrete walls counter the elegantly cast columns and carved neogothic details of the Jewish Art Center. Wood grain impressions reflect the nearby forest. The addition was built to create texture for the custom wall. Wooden boards were sandblasted and incorporated in an irregular pattern at varied depths. The overarching challenge was building a complex structure in a very tight space on an active campus. Another was the execution of consistently colored concrete. Unpredictable chemical reactions produced color variations in the boards which were locally sourced as part of the effort to meet LEED Silver requirements. One hundred and sixty constructability, tombstone and in-place mock-ups were created to identify the right concrete color mix.

Las Vegas Showgirls Sign

2019 DCC Award Winner
Las Vegas Showgirls Sign, T.B. Penick & Sons, Inc.

First Place: Stained / Under 5000 SF

The sign features the words “Las Vegas” in color-changing, 12-foot-tall letters and is flanked by two 26-foot-tall showgirls modeled after the girls that accompanied former Mayor Oscar Goodman at public appearances. Las Vegas Paving brought Penick onto the project due to their extensive knowledge of decorative concrete, asking them to help turn the city’s design-intent into reality, and to do it within the tight deadline of approximately 30 days.

This new gateway sign welcomes travelers to downtown Las Vegas and provides pedestrians an opportunity for a selfie. It features oversized, cast-in-place, concrete poker chips and dice, and a large roulette wheel. In order to achieve the bright-white paving Penick used a special mix of white cement, white sand, and white aggregate, then hand broadcast clear glass onto the surface and exposed it. Once sufficiently cured, the project was stained with custom water-based colors created to match the color rendering.

Dairy Block, Colorado Hardscapes

First Place: Polished Overlays / Under 5000 SF

The lobby design for this hotel/office building in downtown Denver called for a dark, matte finish flooring. Bomanite Modena SL Custom Polishing System in Charcoal was chosen, with grinding stopping at 200 grit, and sealed with a penetrating sealer to provide the matte finish. Zinc divider strips created the pattern. The depth of grind exposed the coarse aggregate in the mix. The designer was thrilled with the appearance and the contractor has had two other designers specify the same product/color/finish for upcoming projects.

Skyline New York Offices, Industrial Caulk & Seal

First Place: Polished Overlays / Over 5000 SF

The owner chose to rehabilitate an existing warehouse for their corporate offices. The largest challenge lay in polished concrete as an afterthought rather than part of the original plan. The renovation included adding a large mezzanine as second story offices. On the first floor, an aging slab, the owner chose a polishable overlay to ensure the flooring was uniform and not crisscrossed with repairs. An open, exposed polished staircase transitioned between the first and second floors. Additionally, the owner wanted the floor to appear as seamless as possible. Through long hours and extended pours, the polished contractor was able to meet these demands.

2019 DCC Award Winner
Bennett NC Garage/Man Cave, Scout’s Custom Concrete

First Place: Polished / Under 5000 SF

The flatwork contractor for this garage had burned the concrete with his trowel machine, leaving behind unsightly black marks. The owner hoped they could somehow be incorporated into the finished product. Scouts had three days in which to complete the project. In that time they produced a concrete floor system that will last and be aesthetically pleasing, while disguising the mistakes of the previous contractor.

The owner chose durable and LEED friendly polished concrete for the common areas and corridors. To add another layer of dimension, and to enhance the overall theme, stained lines were included in the finish. The five different colored lines originate in the main elevator lobby and weave through the corridors, connecting all the spaces.

This glue-covered, plain gray, front porch was converted into a focal point with less than $500 worth of materials. The owner gave Intricate Concrete creative license to use a concrete overlayment to simulate a wood plank entry. Color was critical, making sure it blended with the house and did not take away from the stone or other materials. A spray texture was hand troweled onto the porch using a pool or funny trowel, using a drag and catch method to create “pockets” of depth. This was followed with a light broom, then 10mm plastic was drug across the broom finish to lessen the broom definition and make it look more natural. A 10-foot straight edge was used to help lay out the planks, which were hand-carved with a carbon-tipped tool.

Sundek was given four days to complete this 13,000 SF hardscape. On Monday four crews worked all day on prep. Tuesday, they applied the base coat and prepared the hand-taped design. On Wednesday, the Sundek Classic Texture system and base colors with three-color aggregate effects were applied. Thursday the crews installed mastic and cleaned the jobsite. The owner was beyond ecstatic with the result and most importantly, pleased that the installation team was able to complete the project within his deadline.

Royal River Front, Salzano Custom Concrete

First Place: Cast-in-place – Stamped / Under 5000 SF

The objective was to convert a heavily wooded side yard of this A-frame mountain house into usable space that blended with local nature. The patio features a center firepit, hanging swing, enough landscape lighting to confuse the local airport (the contractor’s opinion), and a concrete combination of a wide wood plank pattern with a unique river rock pattern to add visual interest. Access to the patio was hilly and difficult. Color selection for the wood plank areas was a challenge because none of the dozen shades of brown on the color chart was quite right. The patio is at the top of an elevated area of the yard, about 12 feet higher than the terrain around the house, so a series of steps and landings to provide access to the patio were also part of the project.

This multi-faceted promenade extends two kilometers along the coast in Penang, Malaysia. Decorative concrete treatments include a scalloped border separating the fishscale portion from the beach-like sandscape, circular seating, pedestrian walkways, a “Sunbird” feature, a sculpture base and a stylized conch shell under the pergola. Two decorative pedestals covered in exposed aggregate are home to a commemorative plaque and poem. The judges admired the various textures and colors, and commented on the difficulty of installing it with no bleeding.

888 at Grand Hope Park, Trademark Concrete Systems

At 888 Grand Hope Park, Trademark created a new amenity space on top of an existing 8-story parking garage in downtown LA. The deck consists of 15,300 SF of decorative concrete paving and 1,700 LF of curbs and walls. The biggest challenge was constructing the CIP concrete benches and walls, as they were placed over foam, and the height and width of the battered walls varied constantly. They also included a difficult light niche that required foam strips to be placed in the formwork to create the block out. This was especially tricky when the benches and walls had a radius. Another challenge was the logistics of getting the materials (rebar, wire mesh, foam fill, forming materials, concrete, etc.) up eight stories.

To overcome the obstacle of a wood subfloor in poor condition the contractor floated wood decking and installed hard-backer. They used a four-part system of primer, base coat, Sundek metallics and a urethane sealer for abrasion resistance. The judges liked the wavy pattern and the artistic choice.

Bullion Coatings, Katy, TX

2019

This splashpad features Sundek products in an array of colors and patterns. It was designed to mimic the swamps of Louisiana with stars reflected in the water. The design consists of fourteen custom colors, 400 stars, six “constellations,” three template trees, four colors on the “grass” area, and a four-color template moon.

Working with the general contractor, Bullion was on a tight timeline. They were set to start the project the week after Hurricane Harvey hit Houston, and although Houston experienced the worst natural disaster in its history, work had to continue. Crews arrived to three inches of mud on the site with 15 days to finish. It took six days to lay-out and texture the exact design from the architectural plans. The remaining nine days were spent meticulously applying the 14 custom colors. Throughout the 15 days of install they had three days of rain. The project was completed on time and to architectural specifications.

2019 DCC Award Winner
Albukhary International University, Bomanite Malaysia

First Place: Concrete Artistry / Over 5000 SF
First Place: Multiple Applications / Over 5000 SF

Multiple finishes were employed to complement and enhance the Moorish Islamic architecture of the buildings, which are interconnected with walkways and driveways. Fountains in the courtyards are covered with exposed aggregate in black and golden-brown pebbles. Hostel courtyards were paved with exposed aggregate in varying shades with saw cut and timber grouted joints to form linear details of the geometric pattern. Walkways are broom brushed with 6-inch wide smooth troweled borders that connect the entire campus.

When Bomanite Malaysia was commissioned to refurbish the paving, they were presented with an opportunity to resolve a major crisis for the owner. Turfed areas, linear ponds and a water fountain cum skylight feature sit above an underground parking area. Poor structural installation and defective waterproofing causes the entire basement car park to flood whenever it rains. Exposed aggregate and tile work were crazed and cracked – in short, a poor job by another contractor. The best and most economic solution was to remove and replace the defective installations. It was a tremendous challenge that required perfectly engineered coordination in close concert with the mechanical/electrical, plumbing and waterproofing trades.

2019 DCC Award Winner
Miller Park Amphitheather, T.B. Penick & Sons, Inc.

First Place: Cast-in-place – Special Finishes / Under 5000 SF
First Place: Multiple Applications / Under 5000 SF

Penick collaborated on the design and installation of the splash pad with Aquatic Design Group and their inhouse mosaic artist. The integrally-colored, quarried-stone finish concrete work and monolithically-embedded mosaic tile design reflect the pattern found on San Bernardino’s largest library, adjacent to the site. Inspiration for the design came from the library’s hand-painted Mexican tiles, incorporating gold, yellow, blue, and iridescent tiles which provide a unique reflectivity that shimmers and sparkles. The 2,464 SF of mosaics took two months to create, including the time to procure materials.
